Welcome to the Fabrication Process Page

Air-controlled props are great for linear movements. Dealing with air compressors and pneumatic cylinders can be extremely dangerous.... Use Caution At All Times ! Consult a professional before experimenting !!!

Our Steps in Creating a Pneumatic Prop Mechanism

  1. First we sit down and "think" about what we want to build, and what different functions it will have.

  2. We then sketch or doodle a design on paper (or a napkin if we're consulting over lunch or dinner).

  3. Then we create a simple model of what we want the prop to do. Usually this entails using wooden or metal dowels and mini machine screws.

  4. After the model-building phase, we compile a materials list and formalize the sketches with dimensions and measurements.

  5. Now comes the prop-selection phase. We usually purchase latex foam-filled props from some vendors we deal with, and modify and affix them to the mechanical structures we build (why re-invent the wheel, eh?) We may create our own foam ghouls if we can make them at a lower cost.

  6. We then purchase all of the materials and begin fabricating the mechanisms.

  7. After the fabrication process, we attach the foam-filled latex prop to the mechanism.

  8. We'll then determine the overall weight of the movable part of the mechanism, and use mathematical formulas to determine how much air pressure will be needed to move the prop at various speeds, which gives us an indication on what size cylinders and flow controls we need.

  9. Then we decide how we will control the prop. We may make it computer-controlled, or use digital timers and pressure mats.

  10. After wiring the controls, we'll run several stress tests to determine the durability of the prop mechanisms.

  11. Now the prop is ready for sale, display or rental.
